Private hikes with transportation can be arranged for up to 4 participants. If transport is not needed, the hike can be arranged for groups of more than 4 participants. Feel free to get in touch and we’ll find the best solution for you together.

Step off the beaten path and experience one of the most authentic Estonian adventures — a bog-shoe hike across the country’s ancient bogs with traditional Estonian food enjoyed outside in nature.

On a bog-shoe hike, we use special wide bog-shoes that allow you to walk in places you normally couldn’t reach. During the hike, the guide will share stories about the bog ecosystem and its local flora and fauna. You’ll also see unique plants, bog pools and beautiful untouched views of Estonian nature.

The bog changes with every season, offering an unique experience year-round. In winter, the same bog-shoes become snowshoes, letting you glide across frozen, silent beauty.

The hike usually takes place in Kõnnu Suursoo (located in the Põhja-Kõrvemaa Nature Reserve) but the guide chooses the best location depending on the season. The chosen bog is always only 1–1.5 hour drive from Tallinn and has a watching tower with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

The hike also includes a meal, giving you a taste of traditional Estonian cuisine. The menu changes throughout the year to offer seasonal flavors. Savory options may include homemade UNESCO-listed Mulgipuder or Estonia’s beloved chanterelle sauce. For dessert, you can try treats like kama foam or spotted dog (kirju koer) and the popular curd snack kohuke is always included.

BOG-SHOE HIKING TIPS

To make the most of your bog-shoe adventure in Estonia, here are a few practical tips. You’ll find more details in our blog post about bog-shoe hiking — and don’t hesitate to contact your guide if you have any questions.

  • Clothing: check the weather forecast and dress in layers to stay comfortable while exploring the bog. 
  • Wear season-appropriate hat.
  • Footwear: choose comfortable season-appropriate shoes that are perfect for walking in nature – leave heels/open-toed shoes/ flip-flops at home.
  • For a safe and enjoyable experience, please inform your guide about any allergies or dietary needs.
  • Take a water bottle with you to keep you hydrated throughout the hike.

The bog-shoe hike is available all year round, except during the bird nesting season (April 23 – June 24) when walking with bog-shoes is not allowed. During this peaceful period, we offer an alternative — a guided walk in the bog along the wooden boardwalk, where you can still enjoy the stunning views of Estonia’s bogs. All other hike details stays the same.

We offer special rates for families with children. The tour is suitable for kids aged 12 and up — feel free to contact us for more details.

The private hike is just for your group (or a single participant) — no one else will join.

CANCELLATION

When traveling, unexpected things can happen - that’s why we offer flexible cancellation. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before the tour. In this case, the participation fee will be fully refunded. Learn more about our terms and conditions here.


HOW TO BOOK

Here’s an overview of the booking process. Please make sure to contact Hey Estonia to check availability before purchasing your hike from the online store.

  1. Check availability: Contact Hey Estonia to check the availability of your preferred hike date and time. You can fill out the form below or send an email to info@heyestonia.com or message us on WhatsApp +372 5307 2169.
  2. Buy online: Once Hey Estonia confirms your preferred date and time, your spot will be held for 48 hours. To secure your booking, please complete your payment within this time through the Hey Estonia online store. If payment is not received within 48 hours, your reserved time may be released for other bookings.
  3. Booking confirmation: After completing your purchase, your hike is officially confirmed. You will receive a confirmation email.

Bog-shoes help to prevent sinking into soft, wet bogs and protect against light winter snow. Easy to put on and remove. Walking on bog-shoes is the best way to explore hidden areas that are otherwise inaccessible. In wetter conditions (autumn and spring), rubber boots are ideal. Don’t worry – we provide them for a hassle-free experience. We move at a calm pace, taking time to notice and capture the bog’s unique beauty. Crystal-clear bog pools reflecting the sky. Autumn is ideal time for visiting the bog – no mosquitoes, crisp air and vibrant seasonal colours all around. Depending on the season, we take a break on the dry moss using sitting pads. Autumn – the season of colours in the bog. September is cranberry picking season - red berries resting on the vibrant red peat moss. Cranberries remain throughout autumn, can be picked even in winter when the snow is thin, and are also found under melting snow in spring. We will climb the watching tower to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Estonia’s untouched bogs. The view from the watching tower - frost meeting the morning sun creates steaming bog pools and sparkling grasses. Peaceful early mornings surrounded by untouched nature. Traditional Estonian homemade dish Mulgipuder with meat – a creamy mashed potato and barley porridge recognized on UNESCO’s heritage list. Estonian homemade dessert Spotted Dog (Kirju koer) made with biscuits, cocoa, butter and marmalade, loved by locals. Kohuke – popular chocolate-covered sweet curd snack, always on the menu. Quiet, snowy bog on a January morning around 10 AM. Under a thick layer of snow, the bog becomes a magical hidden world where even the boardwalk disappears. Spring transition: melting ice and budding greenery in the bog. The summer bog is a sea of fluffy white cottongrass, swaying gently in the breeze like soft clouds. Blooming Labrador tea fills the summer bog with an enchanting scent. Touch the soft cottongrass and breathe in the aromatic Labrador tea – summer in the bog awakens all your senses. Summer turns the bog lush and green, a peaceful retreat for wandering and breathing in fresh air. Sunrise in the bog is a magical moment when the first light paints the landscape in gold and mist. Cloudy foggy mornings create mystical bog landscapes. Cloudberries, golden jewels of the bog, ripen in late summer. The carnivorous plant Sundew thrives in the bog’s harsh conditions, catching tiny insects to survive.
