On a bog-shoe hike, we use special wide bog-shoes that allow you to walk in places you normally couldn’t reach. The bog changes with every season, offering an unique experience year-round. In winter, the same bog-shoes become snowshoes, letting you glide across frozen, silent beauty.
The bog-shoe hike usually takes place in Kõnnu Suursoo or Kakerdaja bog, in the beautiful Kõrvemaa region. The guide chooses the best location depending on the season and weather conditions. Both locations are just a 1–1.5-hour drive from Tallinn and are much-loved by locals.
Bog-shoe hikes begin with a short walk through the forest and along the boardwalk before we reach the point where we put on our bog-shoes. During the bog-shoe hike, you’ll walk on top of a layer of peat 6–8 metres deep, which holds water like a giant sponge. The amount of water varies depending on the season. Along the way, you’ll discover the unique life of the bog, learn about local plants, and gain a deeper understanding of Estonian nature.
At the end of the hike, you’ll return to the starting point along the boardwalk without bog-shoes, giving you the chance to enjoy the wooden trail from a different perspective.
During or at the end of the trip, you’ll also get to taste local Estonian food, giving you a taste of Estonian cuisine. The menu changes with the seasons and is always prepared with your dietary preferences and food allergies in mind. Depending on the season, the savory dish may include traditional UNESCO-listed Mulgipuder or another homemade Estonian dish made with fresh local ingredients. Dessert may include Estonian favourites such as Spotted Dog (Kirju Koer) or Kama foam. The popular sweet curd snack kohuke is always included.
Outdoor picnic arrangements and style depend on the season and weather. The picnic can take place either halfway through the hike or at the end.
